Peninsula Council 595 Community Strips
Peninsula Council 595 was founded originally as Newport News Council in 1918, headquartered in Newport News, Virginia. In 1929 the name was changed to Peninsula Council. The council merged in 1992 with adjacent Old Dominion Council 601 of Suffolk, Virginia to form Colonial Virginia Council 595, with the new council headquartered in Newport News.
Before council shoulder patches were authorized by the National Office in the early 1970's Scouts wore community and state strips on the left shoulder of their uniform shirts. Early community strips (KRS) had red embroidered lettering on khaki twill for Scouts and gold lettering on blue twill (BGS) for Cubs. Later versions featured white lettering on a red twill strip (RWS). Below are examples of BGS, KRS and RWS emblems from communities served by Peninsula Council. If you are aware of others please let me know! Thanks to Larry Johnson for sharing pictures from his collection to make this page possible.
