Old Dominion Area Council 601 was founded in 1927, headquartered in Suffolk, Virginia. The council merged in 1992 with adjacent Peninsula Council 595 to form Colonial Virginia Council 595, located in Newport News, Virginia.

The council merged in 1992 with adjacent Peninsula Council 595 of Newport News, Virginia to form Colonial Virginia Council 595, with the new council headquartered in Newport News.

Before council shoulder patches were authorized by the National Office in the mid-1970's Scouts wore community and state strips on the left shoulder of their uniform shirts. Early community strips had red embroidered lettering on khaki twill. Later versions featured white lettering on a red twill strip (RWS). Below are examples of RWS emblems from communities served by Old Dominion Area Council. If you are aware of others please let me know!
